Expert Committee: Nomenclature and Labeling

In accordance with section 7.07 of the 2015–2020 Rules and Procedures of the Council of Experts, this is to provide notice that the Nomenclature and Labeling Expert Committee intends to postpone the 4-digit year format requirement for expiration dates in General Chapter <7> Labeling.

USP has received comments from stakeholders about implementation challenges related to the updated standard for product label expiration dates. The revised General Chapter <7> Labeling, which appears in USP 42-NF 37, would require the year of the expiration date to be expressed in a 4-digit format on all official drug product and dietary supplement product labels.  The Expert Committee proposes to delay the implementation of the 4-digit year format described in the section titled “Expiration Date and Beyond-Use Date” to allow time for stakeholders to come into compliance with the new standard. The date of implementation is yet to be determined by the Expert Committee and will be forthcoming.
