USP-NF 6-Issue Publication Model FAQs

As of July 2025, USP-NF is consolidating its official publications from 15 to six issues per year. Subscribers will receive the same information and updates related to USP standards, general chapters, and monographs as before, now packaged for release on a bimonthly basis. This new publication model will provide subscribers with expedited publishing timelines, a regular distribution cadence and a single bi-monthly source for official content.

Publication Model Comparison

Current Model

• The USP-NF’s current publication model consists of six non-official (PF) publications and 15 official publications, all distributed annually.
• Each Pharmacopeial Forum (PF) publication prompts a 90-day comment period for its proposals. Once that period has concluded, USP’s Expert Committees evaluate, approve and each proposal to advance it to USP-NF.
• There are two PFs per USP-NF issue and three issues per year, resulting in six PFs to every three USP-NF issues.
• The current official publication schedule includes three USP-NF issues per year, distributed in November, February and June. Twelve Accelerated Revisions are published per year, each on the last Friday of each month.

Future Model

• The USP-NF is transitioning to a new publication model that increases our opportunities to publish official content into USP-NF, condensing yearly official publications from 15 to six. These will be published every other month on the last Friday of each month. This new model will go into effect July 25, 2025 with the first issue of USP-NF 2026.
• With the new model, Accelerated and In Process Revisions (IPR) will publish together, on the same day in USP-NF.
• Pending Monographs and Revision Bulletins to address Urgent safety-related issues will continue posting on an as-needed basis, directly into the USP-NF online publication.
• Implementation timeframes will not be impacted, and will proceed as follows (unless stated otherwise – see General Notices):
  • IPRs: 6-month implementation 
  • Revision Bulletin (RB) & Errata: official the 1st of the month after posting date
  • Interim Revision Announcements (IRA): official the 1st of the second month after posting date

Benefits and Impact

• The updated publication schedule will condense and reduce the number of official publications a year from 15 to six.
• The new bi-monthly cadence will promote efficiency in publishing files and revisions by standardizing the publishing cadence and combining all revision types into the same publication. 
• Certain files and revisions will be able to publish two to four months faster than they would in the current model.
• More frequent opportunities for balloting will optimize workflow for Expert Committees, reducing annual ballots for some and increasing annual ballots for others.
• With pending monographs publishing directly to the USP-NF online platform as needed, online information will always be up-to-date.
